When Lori Chavez-DeRemer won the race to represent Oregon’s 5th Congressional district, I was disappointed, but I kept an open mind and did not allow myself to prejudge her. Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer has now been in office for over a year, and I am disappointed to say that I believe she has failed young Oregonians in Congress and shown herself as out of touch with our priorities.

Young Americans are frustrated with the state of our country. In Congress, Chavez-DeRemer has a record that is diametrically opposed to the priorities of young people. She has abandoned us by supporting anti-choice legislation, opposing action on climate change, and siding with extremists instead of delivering results for Oregonians.

Generation Z is the most pro-choice generation in the country, and we will not give up on the fight for abortion rights. As much as Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer tries to dodge questions about abortion, she cannot hide from her record. Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer told Oregonians that she would oppose any abortion funding ban. This was until extreme Republicans proposed an amendment to a defense bill to ban abortion funding. Chavez-DeRemer fell in line and voted for the amendment after a pro-life group threatened a primary challenge. While this is just one of many examples of the Congresswoman’s anti-choice record, it shows her ignorance towards our fundamental values of freedom and bodily autonomy.

In Oregon, we have seen the threat climate change poses firsthand and young people around the world are getting increasingly worried about the effects climate change will have on them. Yet somehow Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer still denies the existence of the climate crisis. Just 3 months after taking office, Chavez-DeRemer voted with the Republican House majority to repeal crucial environmental protections, further exacerbating climate change. As much as Chavez-DeRemer tries to posture herself as a moderate, her record shows otherwise. She has shown a fundamental disregard for the genuine and detrimental effects climate change is having on our communities.

In Congress, Lori Chavez-DeRemer has consistently sided with right-wing extremists over the interests of Oregonians. Young Americans are tired of the right-wing extremists who control the Republican party. In Washington, Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer has proven that she cannot govern effectively, and she has continually allied herself with MAGA Republicans. From voting to elevate Mike Johnson, to restricting abortion rights, to betraying the LGBTQ+ community, Chavez-DeRemer has shown that she is completely out of touch with Oregonians and that she will not deliver the results we deserve.

While these votes and decisions Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer makes may seem small to some, the reality is that the decisions made by today’s leaders are the same decisions that will most impact our future generations. Chavez-DeRemer has repeatedly made decisions that have the potential to be wholly destructive to future generations and has shown a willful ignorance of the challenges young Oregonians face. Rather than working to solve the multitude of issues we face, Chavez-DeRemer has voted in lockstep with right-wing extremists to further divide us and take us backwards.

It is now clear to me that Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer does not deserve another term in Congress. As the 2024 elections approach, Oregon’s 5th Congressional District will be on the frontlines of the fight for abortion rights and democracy. Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer has abandoned the voters of Oregon’s 5th Congressional District and shown that she is simply too extreme for Oregon. Young voters have the power to shape the outcome of the upcoming elections, and I am confident that Young Oregonians will stand up to MAGA extremism and oust Congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer.
